Umpires’ and Scorers’ courses – winter 2016-17

It is now widely known that the ECB ACO are revising the training structure with effect from October 2017 and in doing so they will incorporate the new MCC Code of Laws. Full details of this new structure have not yet been officially published but we will let you know them as soon as we are able. This coming winter, therefore, will see the last of the course and examination system to which we have become accustomed. We have finalised details of all the courses we intend running in Hertfordshire and details are set out below.

Umpire Introductory Course
This is a new, short, standalone course aimed at any cricket enthusiast who is interested in umpiring. It is a 4 hour course spread over 2 evenings. It is soon expected to become a minimum preferred requirement for umpires in the Saracens League divisions 7A to 10B. It is also very relevant to coaches, parents and any others who are persuaded to don the white coat. An ECB ACO Attendance Certificate is awarded on completion of the course.
Potters Bar CC – Tuesday, 25 October and Tuesday, 1 November, 8.00 pm to 10.00 pm
Hertford CC – Tuesday, 22 and 29 November, 8.00 pm to 10.00 pm

Umpire Level 1A
This course is available to all those who have passed the level 1 and we will be running it as a two-day week-end course in the autumn. In order to accommodate the anticipated numbers and to avoid unnecessary travel we have allocated two week-ends and venues.
Kings Langley CC – Saturday/Sunday 15/16 October, 9.30 am to 5.00 pm each day
Mercure Hotel, Hatfield – Saturday/Sunday 12/13 November, 9.30 am to 5.00 pm each day
All those members who have passed their Level 1 in the last 3 years but have not yet taken Level 1A will be contacted individually.

Umpire Level 2C
Due to the changes for 2017 mentioned above, we have made no arrangements as yet for a Level 2C course which would not, in any case, be run before the spring. We will keep you informed on this as matters develop.

Continuing Professional Development – Achieving Best Practice IV
Two dates have been arranged for this increasingly popular one day course.
Radlett CC – Saturday, March 4, 9.15 am to 5.30 pm
Kings Langley CC – Saturday 1 April, 9.15am to 5.30 pm

As far as CPD is concerned all members are welcome to attend any of the county courses in order to refresh their memories and brush up on the laws. Our chairman has pointed out elsewhere how importantly the league view this aspect of training and development.

Club Scorer Course
The course covers basic scoring matters such as scoring signals, umpire signals and completion of the scoring record. It also includes an overview of the laws of cricket that relate to scoring, a discussion on dismissals, scorebook checking and guidance on end of innings routines and identifying a result. An ECB ACO Club Scorer Certificate will be issued at the end of the course. Attendance on this course is an important step towards qualifying as a Level 1 scorer which will also involve an individual assessment following a season of scoring practice.
